Types of music videos

Narrative based video
A video consisting mainly of a story line relating to the lyrics and genre of the song. This is a good technique to use for engaging the audience. This type of video is often used for songs that feature in films, with scenes from the film cut into the video.

Performance based video
Performance based videos feature the band/artist performing either to the camera or an audience. this is a popular technique rock bands use as there concerts are usually high energy and there is more interest for a viewer to watch the band perform as a whole rather than an artist on their own.

Concept based video
Concept based videos are music videos which base around one idea or concept. They often concentrate on a specific editing technique. Usually a video does not consist totally of one concept.

Animation based video
Animation based videos are music videos which contain animation and effects as visuals, as the song is played over. The animation usually matches and is in sync with the song and is a creative way of making a music video.

Mixture based video
Where there is a musician playing as well as a narrative story line occurring at the camera cuts between them.

Cameo based video
Where someone famous or from the same music label features in the same music video.

History of music videos

A music video is a short film including a song and imagery, produced for promotional or artistic purposes. Modern music videos are primarily made and used as a marketing device intended to promote the sales of the music or the artist.

The earliest music videos , were filmed in the mid 1950's however, before then, as early as the 1920's, films by animators such as Osker Fischinger were accompanied by musical scores labelled 'visual music'.

In 1940, Walt Disney released ' fantasia', an animated film based around famous pieces of classical music.

In 1956, Tony Bennett was filmed walking along the serpentine in Hyde park, London, as his recording of 'Stranger In Paradise' played. It was distributed to and played by UK and US television stations. This then lead to Tony Bennett to later claim he made the first music video.

Dj / singer, JP Richardson (1959) was the first to coin the phrase 'rock video'

The defining work in the development of the modern music video was 'The Beatles' first major motion picture, 'A Hard Day's Life' in 1964, Which was directed by Richard Lester. This then lead to influencing a vast number of musicians, pop and rock group music videos.

In the 1980s, the term 'rock video' was often used to describe this form of entertainment.

Music videos became popular in the 1980s, when MTV based their format around them.

Brief Selection

The brief in A2 media was a choice of three options: Music promo video, two TV advertisement or a short film.
The music video consists of a promotion package for the release of an album including a music promo video which is no longer than 5 minutes long, together with a cover for a CD/DVD package and a magazine advertisement.
The two advertisements option consists of an advertising package for a new product or service including two TV advertisements , together with a TV programme sponsorship sequence and a radio advert or web pop-up.
The short film choice consists of a short film, lasting approximately five minutes, which may be live action or animation or a combination of both, together with a poster for the film and a film magazine review page featuring the film.

A have deciding on the music promo video option because I believe its more focused on my skills of photoshop and taking my learning of filming from my previous media task, as well as helping me to develop these skills further. The magazine and CD cover advertisement is focused on what I aim to do in the future as a career which will be beneficial for my learning in this area of work. I think it is the most interesting and creative and it will be self challenging, including learning more about editing and filming to achieve the intended effect I desire, in which I think will be beneficial to my learning in media studies A2. I am excited and intrigued about the learning about music videos and their codes and conventions as well as the creative side of making my own media product.
