Typography Research

Metallica:
Metallica are a extremely famous rock and metal band. Their unique font style screams rock and metal and can be instantly connoted as a font for a rock/metal band. The long 'M' and 'A' at the begging and end of the font give the font style dimension and a unique touch. This also connotes to me an image of, horns or knives which are dark and scary related items which relate to the rock and metal genre and conventions. The font is black which is typical for a rock band and connotes the band are dark and scary which may relate to their music genre and style. The black font colour reminds me of black tattoo lettering which is stereotypically related to rock musicians and bands.

Bring me the horizon:
Bring me the horizon have a very unique and interesting font style. The bands logo reminds me of a graffiti style of font painted on a wall. The big lettering and font sizes make the band logo and font bold and clear. The font style connotes to me a tattoo style of font with the lettering and imagery around the text and the black colour the font is in. This relates to the rock genre as it is stereotypical that rock musicians and bands have tattoos. The font includes both serif and san-serif styles which work nicely together to produce and aesthetically pleasing logo and text. The dripping text also connotes rock and dark metal as it can be represented as blood dripping. The white text is bold and helps to stand out from the black background.

Guns 'N' Roses:
The Guns 'N' Roses logo and typography looks dated and warn out. The typography looks like it has been engraved with add dimension to the font. The dark brown/black colour connotes the colour f guitars used by the band and the rock genre. The font is in a serif style of font which is more popular in the rock and metal band typography. The font is clear and bold around the logo and can be instantly recognisable. The font style has a western feel to it which links to the name of the band including guns.

AC/DC:
AC/DC's typography is in a serif style of font with sharp edges which connotes the rock and metal genre of music. The font is unique and is aesthetically pleasing which makes the band logo so recognisable and well known. The lightning bolt in the middle instead of a slash has been used due to the bands name relating to electricity. The lightning bolt also connotes the rock and metal genre. The font includes and ice effect around the lettering which relate to their album being called. 'Black Ice'. This adds a unique feel to the text and makes the font creative and interesting. The colour red has been used as the font colour which can connote blood, being related to dark metal genres or love, which maybe a topic of their songs. The colour red connotes the colour of Iron Man the marvel superhero. This is because the band have made the soundtrack to the iron man films.

Idea feedback responses

After creating an idea feedback survey about my possible ideas for my music video and to show me which one was the most popular and why, I have collected 43 responses which have have helped me to make a final decision about the style and contents of my music video for my chosen band. These are the analysed results:

The main gender that has helped me make the idea decision is males, which are stereotypically more likely to listen to rock / metal genres of music.

The most popular age range was 17-21 year olds, which suggests these are the ages ranges that are most into rock music and the age range fits the age of the band.

The most popular idea was performing in a studio/empty room with just the band and their equipment e.g. guitars. As this is the most popular idea I have chosen this idea to go forward with.
Further questions, included what would you add or change in the idea? The most popular suggestions where to add montage footage of the band and their funny moments and backstage action with the music being played over the top.

Location/setting

For my music video, I hope to be filming the band in the studio with just them with their instruments. The studio will have amps and all the equipment needed to film and will create a aesthetically pleasing setting for my music video. I was also thinking about shooting the band in an old room or abandoned location. This is because it will create a different feel to the music video and I believe it suits the genre of rock and metal. Both locations are going to be with low lighting as this is a convention of rock music videos and i believe will create an anonymous feel and add tension to the performance of the band and the music video.

Update on progress

Now I have an idea on the music video theme and what to include, i have started to storyboard possible shots of my music video. This has involved looking back at my research and existing rock music videos and the codes and conventions to give me inspiration and ideas on shots, angles and timings. This has also involved me sketching ideas and shots and adding timings including how long each shot is to each frame.

Idea feedback survey

Please fill out my idea feedback survey:

Update on progress

After brainstorming some possible ideas, I have decided to create a feedback survey on what idea is the most popular and why. This is to help me make a final decision about the style of my music video. After collecting feedback results, I will analyse the outcome and make my final chosen decision.

Brainstorming Ideas

Idea 1:
Starting from the bottom and finishing at the top (bedroom to stage):
The band starting of at the bottom eg. a bedroom practicing and rehearsing.
Throughout the video gradually getting to higher or closer to on stage (the top)
Eg. Next stage in the studio, recording and rehearsing.
Finally making their way to the stage which is considered the top.
Showing how the band started from a bedroom to now performing on stages.
closure to the song could be the band on stage performing the song.
The chosen song (Let Us Drown) will be played over the footage and the band will be singing and performing the song at each stage as they progress to being on stage.
shots including: long shots of the band playing at each stage, close-ups on the band members and them performing and their instruments being played. Pictures taken of the band to then be sped up to produce stuttered 180 degree view of the band. Merge back into video footage. Low angles and high angles of the band and each member. Try to include slow motion?

Idea 2:
Process of walking onto stage:
Process and footage of each stage and moment of the band getting ready to go onto stage to perform.
Including: packing and unpacking equipment, the journey to the show/stage eg. in the van and scenery, laughs and funny moments, Sped-up pictures, walking to the backstage dressing room, walking to the stage, setting up and sound check and finally performing to the crowd on stage.
The chosen song (let us drown) will be played over the footage and will be played by the band on stage at the final stage/ closure of the song (on stage). Could try to include slow-motion?

Idea 3:
Performing in studio or empty room:
The band performing their song (Let Us Drown) in a empty room or in the studio with just them inside with their equipment and instruments etc. Various shots including close-ups and long shots of the band playing and each member performing and their instruments.
Different shots of the band and individual band members infront of a background. eg. The bands logo banner. Sped-up pictures of the band to produce stuttered video footage. Low angles and high angles of the band and each member. I could also try to include slow-motion to add different dimensions and dramatic footage to the music video.

Idea 4:
Montage of backstage, laughs, and funny moments
Backstage action including setting up, the dressing room, getting ready and laughs and funny moments from the band together and from each member. Funny moments in the studio, on stage, the journey to the stage etc. The bands song playing over the visuals. Aim to match the footage with the song. Various shots including POV's, close ups, long shots, handheld footage etc.

The Case - Let Us Drown - Breakdown

Breakdown of chosen song:

Build up til : 0:30
Guitars come in: 0:30
Drums come in: 0:41
Vocals: 0:52
Instruments come in + beginning of 1st verse: 0:54 - 1:12
Chorus: 1:19 - 1:29
Second verse: 1:40 - 2:00
Chorus: 2:07 - 2:17
Guitar solo: 2:17 - 2:58
Vocals: 2:59
Instruments come in + beginning of 3rd verse: 3:00 - 3:18
Chorus: 3:25 - 3:35
Drums stop: 3:46
Guitars finish: 3:56

Breaking down my chosen song (Let Us Drown - The Case) has allowed me section out the different parts of the song which I can then use to help me get specific and relevant footage which is able to fit the parts of the song. I have also taken a note of the time in which each section takes place to help me with the length of the specific footage and how much filming can be fitted into a section of the song. For example, the chorus of the song is ten seconds long which means I have to chose appropriate footage to fit inside that time gap. The visuals and song beat must match to ensure the footage is understandable and recognisable to the audience. I also think the song beat and visuals should match as it allows for an aesthetically pleasing music video.

Update on progress

I am currently moving towards the planning stage of my project. I am about to break my chosen song down into sections and storyboard my ideas, camera angles, lighting, mise-en-scene etc. After looking at current and past rock music videos and highlighting the codes and conventions will help me in the process of storyboarding and brainstorming possible ideas for my music video.

The Case - Let Us Drown Lyric Analysis

The Case - Let Us Drown ( Duration: 3:57 minutes )

Verse 1:
I wonder where we should go now,            Relationship - couple
I wanna lead you somewhere new,           Man leading woman
far away from all this hate and truth       Connotes other people our negative about them
the past is never told,
darling you've just got to hold,
my hand until we rise again

Chorus:
Jump in, let me capture you,                     Being together and holding the one you love.
jump in, let us drown,                                  Couple together
jump in, let me be the one,                        The 'one' relating to the finding of love
jump in, let us drown

Verse 2:
The stories never end,                              Negative stories about their relationship
theres is always something new,
the distant pasts and holy truths,
but when your lost in doubt,                      Lost in the relationship and the issues
never fear just shout it out,
and all our pain will fall apart                   Together they can release the pain and problems

(Chorus)

Verse 3:
That is just the darkness in me,
welcome to my homes and truths,
this is where you choose me or you go,
the people say its bad news,                       Boy being considered wrong for the girl and
but i don't give a s**t,                                  others don't think he's the right for her and have
take my hand, we'll rise again.                  negative views about him, but true love will come
                                                                          up on top and thrive
(Chorus)

Conclusion:
Overall, I think the lyrics of the song and the meaning behind the lyrics are about a relationship between a boy and girl. The lyrics connote the relationship is going through problems and negative situations which may lead to others thinking that the boy is not right for the girl and the lyrics show that the boy is fighting for the girl and connote that together and as couple with true love, they can conquer anything and rise above the negativity and be happy as long as they have one and another. The lyrics can also have a deeper meaning  off failing but with determination and strength you can come up on top and become successful.

The Case - Chosen Band + Chosen Song

The Case are a hard Rock / grunge Band from England, UK. The band consists of five members: Frazer (drums), Tom (guitar), Callum (guitar), George (bass) and Riley (singer). The Band are constantly playing at local gigs and events and are improving with every performance. They are driven to succeed and be the best they can be. Each member of the band has their own unique personality which makes them such a great band. The connection the band have is great and the performances clearly show how the band are in perfect sync to produce amazing rock music.
The band have just released their debut EP - Say Something. However, none of their songs have music videos which makes this a great opportunity for me to produce a music video for them and also which they can use for they're own promotion.

The song I have chosen is "Let Us Drown" by The Case. This song is one of my favourites from the EP and has a great build up, guitar solo and amazing rhythm and beat to it which makes the song powerful and really expresses the rock genre and their talent.

CD Cover (Digipak) Analysis

Jason Derulo - Tattoos:

This album CD cover of Jason Derulo's album, Tattoos includes the artists himself centred in the cover. This connotes that he is the most significant aspect on the cover. The image is in a cartoon/painted style with added tattoos to the artists neck which links to the name of the album. The word 'tattoos' is in a bold, black, serif font which makes it visible to the audience and in is the typical tattoo style. The tattoos on his neck include some of the artists song names and icons such as the trumpet on his ear which is a symbol for his song 'Trumpets'. Finally the artwork on his neck includes an eagle. This connotes that the artist is powerful and strong as well as being a famous symbol for america which is the artists nationality. The artists name is aligned at the top of the page positioned in the centre to make it clear and bold for the audience to see and recognise. The font is in a san-serif font and is white. This makes it stand out from the yellow background and the font represents masculinity and strength. Finally, the album includes a 'parental advisory explicit content' sticker which represents to the audience that the album includes explicit content such as swearing. The yellow background helps to make the images and fonts stand out and look bold which helps when the album is in a shop as it makes it outstanding to the audience.

Green Day - 21st Century Breakdown:

This album of Green Days 21st Century Breakdown includes the band name aligned at the top of the cover in the centre, which is in a graffiti style, san-serif style of font and is coloured white. This makes it bold from the dark background as well as connoting that this is the most important piece of information on the album cover.  The background and image are based in the graffiti style which connotes that their target audience for this album are teenagers and young adults which are stereotypically associated with graffiti art. The image also relates to their target audience as it shows too young people kissing connoting they are in a relationship. This image is related to the album name as the teenagers are based in the 21st century and the word 'breakdown' suggests that the 21st century has fallen apart or connotes its the overall summary of the 21st century. The album name is in a unique style of san-serif font and is yellow to stand out from the the dark, black background.

ACDC - Black Ice:

The images are black and white which relates to rock bands and artists. The background also includes the silhouette of the lead guitarist with his fist up in the air. This connotes to the audience the bands strength and power. Personally, I think the album CD cover, looks like a vodka bottle label which links to the rock and roll lifestyle of drinking a lot of alcohol.

The 1975 - Robbers + comparison

The 1975 - Robbers:

Camera:
In this video the footage and sequences are shot using a handheld camera which creates the feeling of a P.O.V. and allows the audience to feel like they are with the band through their situation. Two-shots are used to show the boy and girl together as to represent their relationship. The two-shots have a link to the mise-en-scene by showing the couple kissing and touching which is an index to show they are in a relationship. The camera is positioned behind the couple in most sequences which allow the audience to feel like they are following this couple through their situation and through their dying relationship.

Mise-en-scene:
In the video, the band are wearing clothes related to the indie and rock genres such as tight, ripped jeans, baggy vests and have long hair. This allows the audience to recognize the genre of the band as it is a stereotypical style for rock and indie artists and bands.
The video also includes lots of genre related items which are iconic to rock music. Such as cigarettes and drugs. It also includes props such as a Gun, mask and a bag of money which represents the robbery and links to the title of the film. These props can also be a metaphor for power and strength. Smoking, sex, guitars and drugs all link to the bad nature of rock associated bands which live up to a reputation of being laid back and not caring.
The video is set is a run-down location which is separated from the city and is deserted. This relates to the indie genre as it is not a mainstream or iconic location such a a popular city which helps the band build their genre to their audience.
The video is set in low key and monotone lighting which relates to the laid back indie genre and can also connote the couples relationship is fading and dying.
In the video the man is shot and has a gun would on lower body. Blood and bandages are used to cover up the wound. Him getting injured is a metaphor for their relationship. The injury connotes their relationship as a couple is injured and maybe dying away.

Sound: The genre of music played by the band is indie-rock. The tone is mellow and calm. This connotes that band are laid back, relaxed and chilled. The band have performed this song using their instruments in a recording studio which has been editing over the visuals.

Editing: The video includes a filter which relates to the indie/rock style by not being mainstream and to be unique. The video is Anti-narrative and has straight and jump cuts to show the pace of the narrative and to include more visuals. The video doesn't include editing styles such as dissolves or fades. The video includes lots of intercutting throughout to show one sequence to the next and to explain the narrative to the audience.

Similar Music Video:
Disclosure - You and me:

This music video is similar due to the narrative. Both music videos include the narrative and story line of two people in a relationship. The videos both show the ups and downs of the relationships and includes jump cuts to show the pace of the relationships and to explain the situations involved to the audience. The two videos also focus on the money aspect as both relationships are poor and try their best to get money. To conclude, both music videos show the bad parts of a relationship, however, both videos show at the end, that being together is the most important factor.

Analysis Of Magazine Advertisement

Jessie J:

This magazine advertisement of Jessie J's album 'Who you are' shows the bold female artist aligned in the centre of the advert. This connotes she is the main focus point and the most important piece of information on the advert. The artist is positioned in a strong pose to connote female power and strength. Her hair and make-up have been done along with matching lipstick and nails. This suggests to the audience the artists style and the colour black connotes a dark side to this artist and the element of intimidation. The text positioned below the image is in the colour gold which helps the title to stand out from its dark background. This colour connotes wealth and success which may be used to reflect on this artists career. The bold title is in a serif style of font which is feminine and luxurious. The album name is under the artists name which connotes the artist name is more significant. The album name is in white which makes it stand out from the background and makes it clear to see on the advert. This is also in a serif font relating back to the feminine and luxuries style of the advertisement. A black area has been used under the image and title to allow for clear comments about the album including, the artists most famous and successful song ("Price Tag" feat. B.O.B.) which people will recognise and may persuade them to buy the album. Finally, the advert includes the artists website URL. This is used to persuade the audience to visit her website to learn more about her as an artist and to influence them to buy concert tickets and her albums / songs.

The Horrors:

The Horrors advertisement of their upcoming album shows a clear and large image of the band themselves sitting down. This helps the audience to recognise the band and may connote the band are laid-back and chilled which may reflect in their music. and on this album. The image is in black and white which connotes they have a dark side and links to the bands name of "The Horrors" which connotes the band are rock or metal based to the audience. The image also include a wolf's head in the background. This is made significant and bold by the white background and the alignment. The wolf's head connotes the band are scary and have a evil element to their style and music. The wolf is a vicious and feared animal which may relate to the impression the band want to send out to the audience looking at this advert.  The title of the band and the album have been positioned at the top of the advert and is coloured white. This is used to make it bold, clear and important to the audience. The font is in a san-serif style which connotes masculinity and power. This links to each letter being in upper case. The album release date is aligned at the bottom of the advert which suggests it is less significant. However, it is in a white font which makes it stand out from the background and making it clear to read.  Finally, under the release date is reviews about the album. These are positive reviews to persuade and encourage the audience to buy the album and to check out this band. It also includes the bands tour date and website URL, which helps to persuade the audience to visit the website and to buy tickets to see the band live.

Example:

The magazine advertisement for artist: Example's album includes a bold title which the audience are drawn to when the first see the advert. This is made clear by the black background colour and the white san-serif text. The san-serif font connotes the masculine side of the text as well as making it bold and clear to read. The title is aligned at the top of the advert, in the centre, this connotes it is the most significant piece of information on the advert. The album name is imbedded in the various images in the centre of the advert. The images show the artist in each photograph which helps the audience to relate and recognise the artist and their music. The album name is also in bold bald text on a white background at the bottom of the advert. Having the album name twice on the advert connotes this is the most important piece of information on the advert. Underneath this text is the words: 'OUT NOW'. This is used to tell the audience to get the album instantly and to go and listen to his music. The advert also includes the artists other singles and popular songs. This is used to help the audience recognise the artist from his songs and may cause the audience to buy the album as they will have listen to these songs as they are his most successful and popular. Finally, the advert includes the symbol and text of iTunes. This is a popular place to get music and will be recognisable to the audience and also connotes the artists success being on iTunes.

The purpose of music videos

Music videos are designed and produced to sell to the audience. They are used to promote an artist or band and the song. The audience are being sold this by the music video by making them have certain emotions and feelings when they watch the video and after they have watched it. It makes them feel a certain way using the selected visuals and the words in the lyrics of the song which has an impact and an effect on the audience. The songs beat also has an effect on the audience by making them feel the way the media wanted them to feel. For example the song, 'Happy' by Pharrell Williams. This song has an upbeat with a clap along rhythm and catchy beat, which links to the word: 'happy' and makes people remember and instant recognise the song when they here it. The lyric 'happy' automatically makes the audience feel happier and lifted therefore making them feel good at that moment in time. The song was produced to have a positive impact on the audience which has caused for a huge success around the world and therefore achieving its goal of making money and increasing the artists success and popularity.
Music videos are created to sell. The objective for the music video is to make money for the artist or band and to give them popularity and success in the music business.
Music videos contain a main ingredient that causes the audience to be effected vastly by the music video. It makes the audience feel a certain way which causes them to fell good within themselves and causing them and encouraging them to buy the song or the album or even going to buy tickets for a concert.
The audience have been mass manipulated by the music video and by the power of the media production. They become drawn into the music video which causes them to have a sense of pride and other emotions when watching the video.
The music videos allow for a sense of freedom or diversion which is a form of escape and emotional release from everyday lives and problems.

Codes and conventions of a rock music video

Codes and conventions of a rock music video:

Rock music videos are mostly performance based as the band play to the camera or to the audience at a concert or gig. This is used to show the high energy and allows the audience viewing the music video to feel apart of the concert and allows for a more interesting visual. This involves the camera, following and shooting the band members of stage as they perform showing each instrument being played at each stage of the song. These videos can also connote the bands success and popularity as the camera shows the vast audiences and their reactions.

Mise-en-scene of rock music videos consist of the band members on stage, the audience in front of them and lighting, effects and sound amps behind them and on the stage.
