Analysis of music video - Linkin Park

Linkin Park - Numb

Camera:
The opening to this music video, shows a mid-shot of a girl standing on a bridge looking over a river. The opening includes establishing shots of a town and its various buildings. Then it develops to an ariel shot of the DJ from the band and his equipment. It then shows a high angle shot of the whole band and each band member playing their instrument. The music video includes various close-ups and long shots of each band members performing the song with their instruments or singing. The music video develops to the school scenes with a high angled, mid-shot of a classroom and a close up on the girl and her drawing. The music video includes various pans and tilts to show each band member and their instruments as they perform the song. A low angled shot is used to show the girl drawing a statue which connotes the size of the statue. A long-shot is used to show the girl sitting in the classroom as the background is sped up to connote she is alone everything is ignoring her and her existence. The camera is used to zoom in on the lead singer and the band as he sings and they perform.
A low angled, long shot is used to show the girl falling onto the floor from the stairs. A high angled, long shot is used to look down on the girl lying on the floor which connotes she is weak, hurt and being bullied as the background is sped up again to connote no one cares about her and they just get on with their lives, ignoring her existence again. The camera is used to pan around the outside of the school and finishing at the girl sitting alone, while the background and the people are sped up again. This is in sync with the song as the music becomes faster so does the visuals. The camera is used to show a close-up of the lead singer, singing into a microphone as it zooms out to show the location of the band in a church. A mid-shot of the girl is used to show her frustration during her painting and to show the rest of her work in the background which connotes she draws and paints a lot as her way of ignoring the rest of the world and her problems. The closure to the music video and song shows a low angled long shot of the church floor and red carpet and the girl running, to where the band performed. Finally, a close-ups is used to show the sad expression the girls face as she is out of time.

Mise-en-scene:
The opening setting is a town with various buildings, statues and a bridge over looking a lake in which the girl is standing on dressed a leather jacket, jeans and a backpack which is related to teenage girl fashion and allows the audience to relate to her. The backpack connotes she is at or going to school.
The band perform in a vast church with their instruments and equipment, and they are all dressed in dark clothes which connotes the are a rock band, as dark colours like black are related to rock and nu metal.
Another setting is the classroom with desks and a board and a teacher dressed a shirt, holding a stick which he points at student connoting he is important and in-charge. The students all in their own casual clothes which is relatable with collage students. The video show the school corridors and outside courts which the audience can relate to and understand.
Another setting is the girls home with her mother with a kitchen and dining room.
The girls facial expression throughout the music video is sad and depressed as she is alone and getting bullied.
The girl is in a room filled with drawings and painting which connotes she has done by her way of forgetting about her problems and her enjoyment.

Sound:
The sound is the song played from the band and their instruments in a studio which has been edited over the top of the visuals which have been muted to allow the audience to listen to the song clearly with no background noises. Rock genre.

Editing:
Editing has been used to cut from each scene using jump cuts to represent the pace of the song, to match the visuals with the beat and tempo of the song and to show each band member playing their instruments or singing. The background is sped up to connote she is alone and everything is ignoring her and her existence.
