Analysis of music video - AC/DC

AC/DC - Highway to Hell

Camera:
The opening to this music video includes a extreme long-shot and zoom out, of the vast stage and crowd. This allows the audience to see the whole concert in one frame and connotes the bands huge fan base and success. A zoom into a long shot of the guitarist as he appears from under the stage is used to show him being raised onto the stage and the effects which surround him. A long shot from inside the crowd is used positioned as a low angle looking up at the band member. This connotes his dominance and authority on stage. It also creates a sense of the audience being inside the large crowd, looking at the band, at the concert. Mid-shots and long-shots are used to show each band member play their instruments and perform on stage. Extreme long shots are used to show the whole band on stage performing, the production eg lighting and the vast crowd in front of them cheering. This connote their success as a band and their huge fan base and popularity. Close ups have been used to film the crowd at the concert. The close up allows the audience to see their facial expressions and they're excitement at this event. Low angled close ups are used to show the lead singer, singing. The low angle, looking up, connote his power and significance on stage and as a person. Pan shots have been used to show the crowd. This is because the crowd is large and a pan allows the audience to see most of the crowd at this event. A crane/ ariel shot has been used throughout the video to show the crowd. A over the shoulder shot has been positioned behind the drummer of the band which elevate the size of the crowd the band are performing to and connotes the drummers importance on stage as he is aligned in the centre of the frame. The shot also allows the audience to see the drummer, drumming and the popularity the band has. Shallow focus has been used to show the clear crowd behind the unfocused lead singer. This is used to show the crowd as well as showing the lead singer who they are watching. This connotes that the crowd are more important as they are a huge reason to the bands success.

Mise-en-scene:
The band are performing on a vast stage with bright lighting and their bands logo on a scree behind them on the stage. This makes it clear to see and bold when looking at the stage and the band performing. The band are dressed in leather and show skin with is typical for a rock musician to dress like. The lead guitarist and the crowd are wearing devil horns on his and their heads which relates to the song meaning and the lyrics. Two devil horns are above the stage on each side with bright red lighting to make them clear and outstanding to the audience. The background is the bands logo in flames which relates to the song title and lyrics. The stage lighting is red to denote the theme of hell and the devil. As the lead guitarist appears from underneath the stage, red/orange smoke is used to connote he is raising from hell, which again relates to the song. Towards the ending of the song the tempo increases as the lighting begins to flash faster which denotes the lighting and song match.

Sound:
The band are performing live on stage with their instruments including guitars, bass, drums and vocals. The sound and singing from the crowd is diegetic sound as well as the band performing. Rock genre of music.

Editing:
Editing has been used as jump cuts throughout the music video to show each parts and aspects of the band including the individual members and the crowd. This connotes the energy and the pace of the performance. Split screen editing has been used to show the crowd cheering at the same time showing the band performing. This is used to compare the crowd and the band and shows how they are reacting to one and other.
