Analysis of music video - Red Hot Chili Peppers

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Californication

Camera:
The opening to the music video includes a zoom out of a animated world and a tilt toward the sky which reveals the bands logo and the name of the song. The music video is a sequence of tracking shots from behind the animated characters to denote the band members are in a game and the audience are controlling them throughout the game. Throughout the music video, the band are playing in the top left corner. This allows the audience to see the real members play the song as well as watching the game style visuals. The video includes both aspects of the band playing and the animated world. The camera is used to show each band members and the band together playing the song and their instruments. Close-ups and mid-shots are used to show each band member playing their instruments and to show the singer singing.

Mise-en-scene:
This music video is animated and includes different locations from snowy mountains to deep under the sea which means the music video includes lots of various settings and animated objects such as buildings, sharks and cars. Each band member has black trousers with no top and a black hat for the drummer. This connotes they are together and as a group/band.

Sound:
The sound is the song played from the band and their instruments in a studio which has been edited over the top of the visuals. Punk-rock / pop genre

Editing:
This music video is mostly animated as a game which involves animated characters of each band member and their travels through the game. The music video includes transitions from the band playing the song with their instruments to the animated game. The video also includes transitions and cuts to each animated character as they travel through the game to the end of the game and the closure of the song, where all four animated band members come together and fade into the real living band members as the reach into the video of the real band playing, which was in the top left corner throughout the visuals. During all the visuals, the game includes: Time countdown, Map, figures etc, to help make the game style of music video realistic and relate-able to the audience. The ending of the music video includes a TV turning off transition to black which keeps to the theme of the audience playing the game.
