Analysis of music video - Guns N' Roses

Guns N' Roses - Sweet Child O' Mine

Camera:
The music video opens with a self-shot / hand held camera which is panned down to the logo of the band. This shows the audience watching, the band or artists, playing this song and therefore the audience are familiar with the band and understand their music. The camera is manly shot by hand and covers all aspects of the band members and their instruments and their performance on stage as individuals and as a band together. Pans are used throughout the video to connote the size of the production and the band as they perform. Close ups are used to shown each individual of the band performing their parts of the song along with medium and long shots. The main guitarist (slash) is shot using a low angle during his solo in the song. this connotes his importance to the song as well as suggesting he is powerful and dominance in the band. The music video is a montage of footage from the band playing and behind the scenes, shot using various camera angles such as close-ups and long shots to show the audience the band playing their instruments and to create a sense that the audience are with the band at this performance from the use of the POV filming of a hand held camera.

Mise-en-scene:
The opening shows the set of the music video and stage in which the band are performing on along with the instruments and production equipment. It includes a big stage with the band and the behind the scenes equipment such as lighting and cameras which are shooting this music video. The band are dresses in leather which is associated with rock music and all have long hair which is the stereotypical look for a rock musician / band.

Sound:
The sound is the song which is performed by the band however, it has been altered and engineered to sound perfect and to match the visuals the audience see on screen to create a sense of the band playing it live on stage. Rock genre.

Editing:
The editing in this music video includes a lot of jump cuts to connote the pace and size of the production and the band performing at each stage of the song. The music video includes jump cuts to the band performing to the band off stage and to the production  behind the scenes shooting the music video. The video is edited black and white throughout which connotes they are simple and maybe old fashioned, however the ending shows colour. During the video, constant cuts to different woman on the set us used to connote to the audience the band are 'rock n roll' and have a huge fan base and live the rock star lifestyle. Editing is also used with sound to match the visuals the audience see on screen to create a sense of the band playing it live on stage. At the ending of music video the music video closes with a fade to darkness connoting the ending of the sound and the music video.
