Analysis of music video - Guns N' Roses

Guns N' Roses - Paradise City

Camera:
The music video opens with an establishing shot and pan from right to left, of a vast stadium connoting where the band will be performing and their huge fan base and success. The camera is shot using a hand held camera making the audience watching feel like they are there in the stadium. All shots in the music video are shot using a hand held camera, to get the sense of the audience being with the band and being at their concert. Close-ups and mid shots are used throughout the video to show the band members playing their instruments in sync with the song and to show the lead singer, singing. The opening drop to the song includes a fast pan form the band on stage to the vast crowd in the stadium. This shows the audience the size of the concert and the bands huge fan base, also showing the band performing live.

Mise-en-scene:
The music video includes a vast stadium with thousands of seats and lighting. In the centre of the stadium is a big stage where the band perform and the production tent. This shows to the audience their vast audience and their huge production for their shows.  The band are dressed is leather and have long hair which is a stereotypical look for rock musicians.

Sound:

The sound is the song which is performed by the band. However, it has been altered and engineered to sound perfect and to match the visuals the audience see on screen to create a sense of the band playing it live on stage. To help the band sound the best they can to their audience. Rock genre.

Editing:

In the music video editing is used through jump cuts to connote the pace and size of production and the bands concert. It also allows the audience to see everything in a show period of time which suggests there is a lot to take in when watching the band live. The opening scenes are in black and white, which is a convection of how Guns N' Roses shoot their music videos. However, as the lyrics to the song start with the lead singer the music video turns into colour. Jump cuts are used to cut from behind the scenes with the band members to them all performing on stage. However, On stage the video is in colour and behind the scenes in in black and white which shows the audience the different parts of the music video as well as the colour on stage connoting they are performing live. The black and white footage behind the scenes with the band, is edited into a montage of footage to show the bands busy lifestyle and showing what the band are like not on stage.
